Culture in Behavior Analysis

Please note, all italicized writing in this template is for instructional purposes. You will not be using italics. Remove all instructions in your paper.)

In this section, you will begin by fully describing culture from a behavioral perspective and support with examples or resources (10% of grade). Define culture from a behavior analytic perspective (cite your source e.g. (Author, Date)). Discuss learned behaviors, practice and beliefs and how they are reinforced. Include 1-2 examples of a culture based on the definition. Thoroughly analyze the importance of incorporating culture as a part of a client’s/participant’s context in applied practice and research and supports with examples (15% of grade). Analyze the importance of considering a client’s culture when conducting assessments or selecting interventions in applied practice. Provide 1-2 examples of how culture can be incorporated within this context. [See chapter 2 of Multiculturalism and Diversity in Applied Behavior Analysis to explore cultural identities and chapter 3 for content about culturally sensitive practices in ABA.]

Cultural Humility

Describe cultural humility and benefits of taking a culturally humble approach in practice while providing examples or explanations of what may happen if a humble approach is not used (20% of grade). Explain specific skills needed to adopt culturally humble approaches and specific ways we can develop and maintain those skills. Support with examples and research – cite your source (15% of grade). [One example of a source is listening to Dr. Patricia Wright on Cultural Humility for a discussion on cultural humility. The link can be found in the reference list at the end of this document. See Chapter 14 of Multiculturalism and Diversity in Applied Behavior Analysis for content about how to build specific skills.]

Responding with Cultural Humility

Following the scenario provided in the assignment instructions, describe
more than two supporting examples of a culturally humble approach in action within the context of two groups of people in frequent conflict: (1) behavior analyst researchers and practitioners and (2) anti- ABA autistics and advocates (20% of grade). Introduce the topic of anti-ABA movements. Describe some of the criticisms of ABA by Autistic self-advocates and why this is a conflict for ABA practitioners and researchers. . [See For Whose Benefit?: Evidence, Ethics, and Effectiveness of Autism Interventions (ASAN, n.d.) for a review of the main concerns expressed about ABA by Autistic self-advocates. See podcast Beautiful Humans: The Social ChangeCast, episodes 25 & 26 for a discussion about ABA Reform with a BCBA and an Autistic self-advocate. Links are included in the reference list below.]

Provide three examples of culturally humble responses to criticisms about the field of ABA. The examples provided should be based on the specific skills needed to practice with cultural humility and steps that professionals can take to develop and maintain those skills. Hint: Explaining why one thinks anti-ABA movements misunderstand ABA is

not
an example of how to respond with cultural humility. Avoid focusing on refuting the other person’s experiences, rather discuss how to bridge the gap between the two groups in conflict. Conclusion

In academic writing, the conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your research/discussion points should matter to them after they have finished reading the paper. A conclusion is not merely a summary of your points or a re-statement of your research problem/discussion but a synthesis of key points.
